Tonbridge Triathlon - 7th May 2007
The 2007 Lions Triathlon has had to move to Sevenoaks School due to Tonbridge School undergoing re-development. This year's venue offers a wider pool ( 6 lanes instead of 4), an indoor transition area, the run will take place in Knole Park and there is a new cycle route.

Race Instructions together with details regarding the new cycle route are on the Tonbridge Lions website. Download the entry form in PDF format.

Holly run
CPT at Holly Run 2006We had a good turnout for the Holly Run on Sunday 17th December, with eight men and five ladies representing CPT. Phil's mince pies and tia maria laced coffee afterwards went down well! There will be some photos to follow when I get around to them!

Tuesday swims
Both Tuesday's swim sessions at St Joseph's are now open to everyone. We have lifted the two session restriction. If the pool starts to become overcrowded again then we will look at putting restrictions back in place.

The last Tuesday night swim is on the 19th then the school closes for the Christmas holidays. Tuesday night sessions will start again on 9th January.

Pirie 10 and GRIM
Congratulations to Carl for coming 2nd in the SLH Pirie 10 on Saturday 2nd December. Carl was also first male vet. 11 of us competed in the SLH cross country run. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon, but the ground was pretty muddy and very slippery in places. Suse was 10 minutes late for the start but managed to catch up with Audrey and I on the second lap and assured us that we weren't last! We finished, with a bit of encouragement from Carl and Bernie, just before it got dark. Robin gave us a lift back to the SLH clubhouse where we happily tucked into tea and cakes. Definitely one for the calendar again next year!

Results are also available for three CPT members who got up early the morning after the Christmas party to do the GRIM!

Swim video review
There will be a review of the swim video, taken earlier on in the season at The Bridge, on Saturday 9th December, at 10:30 sharp, following the 08:30-10:00 Crystal Palace swim session. Jon and Phil will be on hand to review the footage and supporting notes. We will meet in the Crystal Palace Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Centre. Please let us know if you are planning to attend so that we can ensure there are enough chairs for everyone and enough laptops for viewing. Tea and coffee will be available.

ITU Canberra Long Distance Triathlon World Championships
AndyCongratulations to Andy McRobbie who represented GB at the ITU Canberra Long Distance Triathlon World Championships in Australia on 19th November.

SuseTonyVictorWell done to all competing, the club finished 9th overall (two places down on last year but the same as 2004) – a good performance given the increasing number of competitors this year. Unfortunately we haven’t won a trophy this time, however, particular notable achievements from Suse finishing 5th woman overall, Tony 13th in the Olympic Category overall and Victor 24th in the overall competition. Full details are available on the UK Tri League website.

Bike maintenance day
Dawn 14 club members turned up early at Jon's garage on Sunday to be educated on how to fix our bikes! Important stuff first - did people want tea or coffee? The two instructors from CTUK, Rob and Phil then started by getting the group to explain their current level of expertise. As this proved to be quite mixed we started with a quick run down of basic checks that should be done before getting on your bike. After that the group tended to split up so that the instructors could run through various useful tips and hints. By the end of the class not only had we consumed copious amounts of tea, coffee, pringles and chocolates but we were now 'experts' on adjusting and replacing (if necessary) brake and gear cables, and Greig managed to get back two gears that apparently had been impossible to reach for some time now - despite numerous bike shops looking at it - still all the tools he bought along with Greighim had to come in handy for something!!! And good news for anyone with wonky wheels (I believe the technical term is a buckle!) as the 14 of us also learnt how to true a wheel! All in all I think that everybody learnt something from the class and it was definitely worthwhile. Personally - I got to play around with latex gloves and get covered in oil - so I was in my element!!! Oh and my bike is the cleanest it has been in a long time... but that's another story.....

View Dawn's photos from the day.

2006 Handicap
Well done to Nick Driver, Geoff Dillon and Stacey Eccles for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the handicap at Sevenoaks.

Final results from the handicap are in the attached spreadsheet. Congratulations to Dan for coming top and taking the coveted Handicap Trophy winning by a fraction over Suse (who must be wishing she’d run just that little bit faster at White Oaks to beat Glyn) by putting in three good performances at Weymouth, Switzerland and Worthing and improving significantly on last year. Dan joins the esteemed roll of honour of winners that seems to include most of the committee members in recent years, so we’re all pleased for a bit of a change on that front!!

Stacey takes 3rd place after two good end of season performances – if only she’d raced the earlier events it all might have been so different.

Dan SuseStacey

Thanks to all those (over 50 of you) who took part over the season for making the event all it is.

September results
Congratulations to Stacey who went to the ITU Triathlon World Championships in Lausanne on 2nd September, after qualifying for the GB team for the first time.

The weather wasn't as kind to us at Southwater as it usually is. those on the 2nd leg got caught in quite a downpour out on the bike and the sun only came out as we were packing away our picnic! Unfortunately we didn't pick up any prizes this year and with only seven teams weren't the best represented Club either. Mary was an honorary member of Team Squirrel with Stuart's brother David and his friend, Simon. Thanks to Team Manager Frances for sorting out the teams and for supporting on the day!

Results are also available from Northampton.

Results aren't yet available from Clacton and the South Coast Classic, which had to be turned into a duathlon because the sea wasn't safe to swim in! Results will be posted when available.

    Back the bid
Salford - Candidate city 2010Salford is bidding to host the World Triathlon Championships in 2010 but there will be facing stiff opposition from the other bidding cities such as Mazatlan (Mexico), Budapest (Hungary) and Aqaba (Jordan). If you would like to back the bid, visit the Salford website.

    London to Paris
Good luck to ex-CPT member, Will Forbes who will be taking in the London to Paris triathlon (in a team of 6), in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust. Will will be running 20k run, swimming for 1-2 hours (depending on speed of team), and cycling 30-40 miles, arriving in Paris approximately 48 hours after leaving London. Will reckons that battling the seaweed, sewage and supertankers in the Channel is likely to be the hardest bit (with one of his 1 hour swims at about 3am), although staying up for 48 hours with no sleep is likely to take its toll too!

Please sponsor Will - his team have raised around £85,000 so far and are hoping to reach £100,000. Donations can be made online.

    IMUK
Ironman UK Congratulations to Andy, Louise and Sarah for finishing Ironman UK on Sunday 20th. Unfortunately John and Ali didn't finish.

There was no mist on the lake this year so the race started on time. The weather was perfect for an Ironman, not too hot but dry with some cloud and a bit of a breeze, which John says slowed him considerably on the bike, even on the downhills! The bike course was just as challenging as last year with over 2000 feet of climbing on the three lap route. This year's run route had also been modified and, with two five mile laps in the castle grounds, was much more spectator friendly.

Andy finished after running back to T1 carrying his bike and front wheel, but was helped on his way again, 55 minutes later, by the support team and still managed to finish in a very respectable time. Louise didn't experience a repeat of the problems she had in Switzerland and completed the whole race with an enormous smile. She even proudly wore her medal to lunch in Sherborne town centre on Monday! Sarah missed the bike cut off by nine minutes last year. This year she managed a quicker swim time, had 25 mintues to spare before the bike cut off, and despite shin splints managed to complete the whole race with ten minutes to spare. She already has an appointment booked at the tatooist on Thursday! John made the cut off for the bike this year and set out on the run. At 18 miles he knew he wouldn't make the cut-off and was beginning to feel unwell. So for once, he sensibly stopped, got a lift back to the medical tent and had a check-up. He's feeling fine, but his big toe nails aren't!!

    Worthing Triathlon
Jon Suse Congratulations to Jon Horsman and Suse Fairfax for winning the Olympic distance Club Championships. Jon also finished 3rd in his age group. CPT had the biggest number of finishers on the day and the loudest support! Results.

The sea was absolutely calm, not a wave in sight. The cycle route was challenging with some long rolling hills but the run, along the seafront, was also absolutely flat. A really great race with a good turnout from CPT. Definitely one for the diary next year! Hopefully by next year Bernie will have learnt to count up to four. Next time you see him ask how his swim went!!

Results are also available from the various races at the London Triathlon and the Surrey Summer Aquathlon.

    Paris to London
Dawn Congratulations to Dawn on completing her charity ride from Paris to London. Here's her account

I recently did a 320 mile charity ride from Paris to London for Great Ormond Street Hospital and have now raised over a thousand pounds (thanks to everyone who donated) for those who still want to make a donation please go to my website.

Before starting the charity ride I was extremely lucky to blag some VIP tickets for the final stage of the Tour de France. As you will see from some of the photos I got to sit in a very flash marquee type bandstand and had front row seats of the finish line and of the podium where they awarded the jerseys etc!!! I also managed to blag a ride in one of the team cars and got to follow the peleton at high speeds around the Champs Elysees (a complete adrenalin rush) this also explains why some of the photos are out of focus!!!

As for the actual charity ride well it was harder than I had expected! Some of the hills were relentless and the early morning starts (6am wake up call and on the bike for about 7.30am) each morning was quite tiring by about the 3rd day - as was cycling an average of 90 miles each day! Being a charity ride it was a real mixed group - only a few club cyclists with the majority of people never having cycled for more than a few miles before. It was particularly scary riding in a group at times as I think that some of them had never actually cycled on a road before - well not a busy one!!!

We had a few accidents but nothing too serious. The funniest perhaps being the guy who fell over as his wife rang him on his mobile phone to wish him luck halfway through the first morning and he stopped to answer it but forgot to clip out!!! Overall, the people in the group I was cycling with were lovely and some of them had either had children who had been treated successfully at the hospital or in some cases unfortunately had lost children to various illnesses - making it all the more emotional but worthwhile when we crossed the finish line and realised how much money we had raised for the hospital!

All in all it was a fantastic trip and my legs have just about recovered (am not so sure about my backside though) - and I'm starting to question whether padded cycle shorts actually work!!!

    The Longest Day
John Congratulations to John Sullivan for completing The Longest Day just three weeks after finishing Ironman Switzerland! Watch John cross the Finish line.

    Ironman Switzerland
Ironman Switzerland logoCongratulations to those who finished IM Switzerland on 2nd July, including first timers, Dan and Victor. It sounds as though it was pretty tough in the heat. Stuart reports that "everyone found it a pretty hard day".

"The backdrop was awesome and the start of the day with the sun coming up over the mountains was a perfect setting for the swim which went well.

"For me, the bike was initially a fast roller coaster ride with much of the route down in the tri-bars and a few long but manageable hills. By the third lap the hills seemed impossible and never ending. The heat was a big factor (36C apparently) and this was a problem on the run with a lot of us choosing to walk much of the way.

The crowds were really great both out in the country and especially in the town - the number bibs had our names printed so people would call you and encourage you personally by your name.

Organisation was excellent and one of the most special moments for me was watching the back markers coming in to the finish just before the 16 hour cut off to a wall of cheering, sparklers and loud music".

    Weekend race results
Weymouth swim startProvisional results from the Weymouth Middle Distance Triathlon on 4th June are now available. It looks as though some of these may need adjusting. For some reason Louise seems to have been given a one hour penalty and Phil seems to have no run time, although I have photographic evidence that he did run, although none to actually show him crossing the finishing line! He assures me he finished in 5:15. I'll amend when final results are available.

Greg Congratulations to Greg for knocking half an hour off last year's time!

Results are also available from TriFest 06 and the Beckenham 10k.

So thanks to all members who helped out over the weekend, to their family and friends and especially to those who raced and marshalled.

VictorJonCongratulations to Jon Horsman for coming second in the over 40s category and to Victor Thompson for having the fastest bike split on the day (52 seconds quicker than the winner!). Results for those members who raced are now available. Full results are also available.

Thanks to Julie for the following photos.

RonCongratulations to Ron Yee who has qualified for the ETU Duathlon European Championships in Rimini, Italy, on 7/8th October 2006. Marathon Meal
2006 marathon runnersPhil organised a very successful curry night as a celebration for those who did this year's London Marathon. He also organised a Marathon quiz, with prizes, and those who had run the Marathon in previous years wore their t-shirts and medals. On the night, Chas and Cathy had the oldest medals from 1992. Although he was unable to attend, Derek Chitty has medals from the first three London Marathons in the early 80s.

    February results
Conditions for these events were very cold. The Brighton seafront was particularly unfriendly with wind and driving rain. Well done to all those who finished. I have to admit that I failed to see any fun in trudging along chilled to the bone. At eight miles, a hot chocolate and a warm, dry sweatshirt seemed much more appealing than a medal at the Finish line and resulted in my first ever DNF!

    Recent results
Ron, Mitch and Glyn braved bitterly cold wind and driving rain to participate in the Deal Tri Winter Duathlon at Fowlmead in Kent. There were only 28 entrants, with 23 turning up on the day and only 20 finishing. So well done CPT for not giving up! Ron

    Indoor triathlon
MikeCongratulations to Mike Nowicki on completing his 10 hour indoor triathlon challenge. Mike reports 'I've completed the charity triathlon which was very hard. Considering there was a massive problem with the ventiltion in the club, I somehow did it. It was very painful and am feeling the effects today, had to call in sick as I have a temperature and can't walk'. Mike wants to thank everyone for their support, especially CPT's Pete Evans, who paced him for the last hour on the treadmill. There is still time to sponsor Mike. Visit his Just Giving website.

    Club swimming sessions
Due to overcrowding in the 8-9pm Tuesday swim session the Committee have had to take action to cut numbers in the three lanes available during this first hour to improve both safety and the value of the training individuals get from this session. As such, from now on the following will apply:

    • All those doing both Tuesday sessions can swim 20:00-21:50
    • All those doing one Tuesday session can swim 21:55-21:50 only (which will mix technique and the normal swim sets)

The Committee will continue to monitor the swim sessions and will look at alternative venues. If you are confused or want more information, please speak to one of the Committee.

    Tadworth Ten
We had an excellent turnout for the Tadworth Ten on Sunday 9th January, with 20 club members participating in the challenging course over the Epsom Downs. Thank you to those who patiently waited, in the drizzling rain, for me to finish, eventually, with a personal worst! Congratulations to Nick Lowman for coming 18th overall and to the following for knocking big chunks off last year's times - Greg Lewis (2 mins), Mark Christie (5 mins) and Pete Evans (12 mins).
