What inspired you to try a triathlon?I lived in Australia for a few years and loved ocean swimming out there - the shark infested waters rapidly helped me improve my swimming! And being surrounded by sporty Aussies, it was only a matter of time! (2001 - Learning Aussie way of beach life as Surf lifesaver).

Where and when was your first triathlon? What was the distance?
Melbourne, corporate relay, sprint distance 2001. Swimming above the amazing marine life of St Kilda beach took the mind off what was to come. We all shared the same bike, first time in cleats! My team mate before me fell off as he was stuck in the cleats - great confidence booster!
Do you have a favourite race? Volcano Tri, Lanzarote – one of the hardest Olympics going, find going uphill easier than downhill due to the impossible winds. Respect to guys who’ve done IM Lanzarote. Raced against Rachel Joyce (in the middle of the photo on the right) this year (2011) - she beat me!
UK race - Perranporth. Love ocean swim triathlons, the bigger the waves,
the better. Perranporth took the biscuit in 2011 though! Swim was changed to a wade due to huge waves and cycle cancelled due to strong winds! Did the run barefoot…on the sand.
Describe your first ever bike
Little purple number with fat white wheels! The envy of the street, a great stunt bike.
First race bike is my pink T-Mobile Giant. Still goes pretty quick!
Where does your bike live? In the living room in the way of the fridge as a deterrent…it doesn’t work!
One piece of advice you would give a triathlon newbie
Smile, especially when the going gets tough and when the cameras are about ;-)
Where's your favourite place to ride?North and South Downs, love the hills…when I’m race weight!
Do you have any pre-race rituals and meals? What are they?No time for rituals or getting nervous pre-race – this is the only advantage of being disorganised and always running late. .

Favourite post-race drink/snack?Hot n Spicy Monster Munch and banana flavour For Goodness Shakes!
Do you prefer to train alone or with a group? With a group, love the social side of triathlons. Rather catch up with pals over a bike ride than a beer… says Pinocchio.
What do you carry with you when you train? My Oyster card.
Do you run to music? If so, what's your favourite?I do prefer running to music especially when training with the missus. Drum and Bass got me my PB parkrun!
Legs shaved, waxed or hairy?Waxed after a few beers, shaved when sober and hairy in winter.
Ironman - Yes/No/Again?Yes, never understood why people would train so much for just one race - when you could do many 'little ones' instead! Then I did one…. and another and will do again. Henley 2012
Ironman tattoo - Yes/No/Where?Not yet, building up my pain threshold by waxing sober!
What do you do in the real world, outside triathlon? Is there a world outside of triathlon? I’m in finance (yawn) which gets in the way of training but helps pay for my specialist nutrition.
Three people you'd like to have dinner with?Graeme Obree, Eddie Izzard, Clint Eastwood.
What are you currently reading? The London Marathon (John Bryant) cheers Rob.
What was the last film you saw?The Ringer (on TV)… shows what measures people go to, to become a winner!
In Pursuit of Happyness (DVD)… don't feel so bad when I have a rubbish race after watching that
What’s next for you?Get back to race weight, remember how to swim and improve times for sprint and Olympic. Maybe Challenge Henley Sept 2012!
