Training - Cycling

We have a Club ride on Sunday, catering for a mixture of abilities. On Monday there is a joint adult/junior turbo, turbo/run session. We also organise sessions at Herne Hill Velodrome, where standard road bikes can be used, on Saturdays and, from April to September, on Tuesday evenings. Please check the training schedule for more details.
We are trialling a joint training scheme with Dulwich Paragons and organise a number of sessions at the Hillingdon cycle circuit throughout the year.
Please note - To join a Club ride you must wear a helmet, carry a pump, tyre levers, two spare tubes, money, mobile phone (with an ICE (In Case of Emergency) telephone number in your phone contacts), drinks and energy food. You should also know how to change an inner tube. Please also make sure you some form of ID and a note of any medical requirements, with you on all rides.
It is unlikely that you will be able to keep up if you have a mountain bike, especially one with knobbly tyres!
Remember: No helmet: No ride.
Please complete the attached Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire and hand to the coach at the first CPT session you attend.
Sunday - Elmers End
The club meets on Sunday at 08:45 for a 09:00 departure from Elmers End every Sunday.
Riders will be divided into groups dependant upon who turns up. Groups and routes will be determined by the ride leaders on the day. The groups will aim to average 17–18 mph; 14–16 mph and 12–14 mph. These are only averages and will vary according to the riders and the route. Obviously if numbers don't allow, we may only have two groups.
These are not coached rides, but volunteer led rides to show riders the chosen route and to try and keep everyone together. The leaders are not qualified cycle coaches.
There are 5-6 regular routes that the rides take and it is recommended that you have this information with you.
See maps and profiles of some of our regular routes.
Helmets must be worn for all Club cycling activities.
We would also like to issue a 'no ice riding' request to all members. So please use your judgement, be sensible and stay at home on your turbo trainer if the weather looks particularly bad. See Advice re winter cycling below.
Please also read the advice on group riding before joining a Club ride.

CPT training link with Dulwich Paragons
As there is some overlap between the two disciplines, with a fair number of Dulwich Paragon (DP) members also competing in triathlons and CPT wanting to improve the cycling component of the sport, the two Club Committees have agreed on an experimental reciprocal training arrangement, with immediate effect.
The aim is to provide a wider range of training opportunites for members of both clubs without the burden of organising extra sessions or individuals incurring two membership fees. In particular for triathletes within DP to benefit from tri-specific run and swim sessions and CPT members to benefit from a wider range and level of cycling opportunities.
For a trial period (1 October 2011 to 30 April 2012) DP members will be able to attend CPT training sessions provided they register name, address and BC or BTF membership number with the CPT Club Secretary prior to their first attendance. DP members will then pay the £5 session fee for each attendance (this covers pool and coach fees). In return CPT members will be able to attend DP rides provided they can produce a CPT membership card if asked and have registered their name, address and BC or BTF membership number with the DP Club Secretary prior to their first attendance. ALL riders MUST have BC or BTF membership to comply with insurance requirements.
Details of all DP rides are available on their website.
As winter approaches please take additional care when out on your bike. A feature of the weather in our area of London is that it is much warmer than in the neighbouring countryside where we ride. This means that 20 minutes after leaving the relative warmth of Elmers End you could feel a significant drop in temperature and road conditions. An example of this is Layhams Lane which at this time of year is known as "Little Siberia" by the locals. Not surprisingly then, it’s also been the scene of a few mishaps for CPTers over the years.
Please check weather conditions to assess the situation carefully before your rides. CPT does not promote club rides in dangerous weather conditions. In such circumstances please consider a turbo session or check the e-group to see if there is an alternative mountain bike session arranged.
Bike bag for hire
The Club currently has one bike bag that is available for members to borrow.
This is a fairly robust item with an integral frame and will be made available on a first come, first served basis at a rate of £10 per week. The Club will ask for a refundable deposit equivalent to the cost of the bag (about £150) which can be made by way of a cheque. Please email for availability and booking.
